Volleyball splits week, now 5-3 (3-3)

The Lady Wolverines’ Volleyball team split this week’s matches, starting with a 3-1 loss to the Laurel Spartans on Tuesday. The Spartans came out with a quick first set victory while the wolverines battle back for a 27-25 second set victory to even the match. After that, the Spartans quickly picked up where they left off in set one, winning the next two sets to seal the deal and the match.

With the loss, the Lady Wolverines fell to 4-3 (2-3) on the season and was staring at three straight losses in a row dating back to last week. However, the three straight losses - Neshannock, Shenango, Laurel - were all loses to preseason highly ranked teams, specifically fighting for the top three positions in the section.

On Thursday though, the Wolverines were able to bounce back into the win column, picking up a three set victory against the Beaver Falls Tigers to improve to 5-3 (3-3) on the season. More importantly, Ellwood City moves back into 4th place in the section standings, the last spot that qualifies for playoffs later on in the year.

The upcoming week has the Wolverines competing three times, starting with a trip to Union on Monday (nonconference), a section matchup at home versus Beaver on Tuesday, and then a short trip “across the pond” to Riv-Ell Cup rival Riverside Panthers on Thursday.
