Golf splits week, just misses playoffs
To make playoffs in golf, teams have to finish either first or second in section for the chance of playoffs. The top two teams in the section who make playoffs then play a match to determine who moves on to the next round. Last year the Wolverines made playoffs, but unfortunately just miss moving onto the next round as they lost to Neshannock in a sudden death playoff hole by one stroke. This year, Ellwood City just missed playoffs, but one match. More specifically, just two strokes.
A two stroke loss to Neshannock on Tuesday, 215-217 ended the playoff hopes for the Wolverines early this season. However, the Wolverines came back just two days later and sent off the Seniors - Grady Smith and Maddy McCommons, with a big victory of the Laurel Spartans 207-221 to finish the season with a winning record.
Ellwood City finished season match play with a record of 8-5 (7-5) while upsetting Mohawk by 4 strokes on the year who qualified for playoffs. Officially the Neshannock Lancers and the Mohawk Warriors will be competing against each other as the two teams that will represent 2A Section 5 playoffs.
Although regular season match play is over, the Wolverines still have the Tam O’Shanter Invitational on Monday while also having WPIAL Playoff representative Jordan Keller compete at Hannastown Golf Club Monday with a tee time of 9:50 AM. Finally, Senior Maddy McCommons will also represent the Wolverines on the girls side of golf playoffs as she will compete for WPIAL Playoffs on Monday at Youghiogheny Country Club with a tee time of 10:40 AM.
